The ABC's of Disney movies, as told by me

Hey everyone! So I thought I'd start something a little different with my posts. Because I thought it would be fun, I'm going to do the ABC's of Disney movies my way. Meaning, I'm going to choose one or two of my favorite Disney movies for each letter (granted there is one for the letter) and I'll tell you a few facts about them as well as why I like them. Also, I hope to incorporate some of the lesser known Disney movies. For example, we all know the movie Aladdin and, although I do like it, I will not use it for 'A'.

So without further ado, let us begin!

A -

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

This is one of those movies that I could watch over and over and not get bored with it. It has a funny, quirky element to it as well as that air of mystery. Also, I love when there's a strong female main character in a movie and that aspect is perfectly embodied in Kida. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Michael J. Fox provides the voice for Milo. :)

Fun facts:

It was reported in 2002 that when the "Submarine Voyage" attraction was closed down in Disneyland, it was to reopen with the theme of this film. However, due to negative feedback from some critics, the idea was scrapped.

The spiral "Atlantis" symbol can be found hidden in many places in the movie.

The written Atlantean language is to be read left to right, drop down a line, and read right to left, continuing this cycle. It was done to create a flowing, water-like movement reminiscent of the Atlantean culture.

fun quotes:

Milo: I'm home. Fluffy? Here, kitty.
Helga: Milo James Thatch?
Milo: Who, who are you? H-How did you get in here?
Helga: I came down the chimney, ho ho ho.

Princess Kida: You do swim, do you not?
Milo: Oh, I swim pretty girl... Pr-Pretty *good*, pretty good. Sw... Good. Swim good. Pretty good. I swim pretty good.

Milo: Will you look at the size of this? It's gotta be half a mile high, at least. It-It must have taken hundred- No, thousands of years to carve this thing.
[Vinny blows it up, and it falls down over a chasm]
Vinny: Hey, look, I made a bridge. It only took me like, what? Ten seconds? Eleven, tops.

Runner-up:
Angels in the Outfield (1994)

This is one of those movies that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you tear up. It makes you believe that even when something doesn't seem possible, like a baseball team that was in last place in it's division winning the championships, you just need to have faith and believe that it isn't impossible. As J.P says, "it could happen." This is a great movie to watch with the whole family and has a great cast including Christopher Lloyd, Danny, Glover, and Tony Danza.

fun facts:

The movie centers around the then-California Angels in Anaheim, but was filmed at the Oakland Coliseum due to the fact that the NFL season was taking place and the then-Los Angeles Rams were using the stadium in Anaheim. The Coliseum was not being used as the Raiders had not yet returned to Oakland.

The film's tagline, "Ya Gotta Believe" (also alluded to in the film), was coined by pitcher Tug McGraw. During the 1974 season, McGraw used the phrase to encourage his fellow New York Mets, who successfully turned around an underdog season to go to the World Series.

fun quotes:

Roger Bomman: God... if there is a God... if you're a man or a woman... if you're listening, I'd really, really like a family. My dad says that will only happen if the Angels win the pennant. The baseball team, I mean. So, maybe you can help them win a little. Amen. Oh, A-woman, too.

Al the Boss Angel: Even though you can't see us, we're always watching.

Until next time,

Health Insurance on the CP!

Hello everyone! Another week has come and gone and you know what that means! New post from me! I know this is just the highlight of everyone's week! - crickets chirping - Yeah, anyway...

I've gotten in touch with the education department at Disney about of the of classes I wanted to take. As I mentioned in some previous posts, I wanted to sign up for Creativity & Innovations: Gaining the Edge and Experiential Learning because my college was going to to give me credit for both! I was very excited when I heard this news because I would still be taking classes related to my major so I wouldn't be too far behind when I got back in the spring. What had recently been brought to my attention however, is the small fact about health insurance. -insert blinding lightning, resounding thunderclap, and small girlish squeal here - To remain under my current health insurance, I have to be a full-time student in the fall. (Summer's a freebie thank goodness!) Full-time for most colleges is 12 credits, I believe. I would be getting 3 credits for each of the Disney classes so I would need to take 2 online classes from back home. Sounds easy enough, right? I wasn't sure, though, when Disney's classes actually took place. I didn't know if they were only offered at certain times during the year so I was a little worried. If they took place in the summer, I would have to take 2 additional online classes in the fall to get back up to my 12 credit minimum to be eligible for my health insurance. I didn't know how I would handle all those classes in addition to the workload I'd have at Disney. So I emailed someone in the Disney education department to hopefully ease my despair. She was very prompt and helpful in her response and told me that I was able to sign up for the summer OR fall classes since I chose fall advantage! That came as such a relief to me because I did not want to pay a ton of money for health insurance! So I'll sign up for my Disney classes when all the fall people arrive!

Also a little tidbit about health insurance: It's different depending on which state you live in. I read somewhere that in Maryland or Massachusetts (sorry, I'm pretty sure it's an 'M' state!), you're under your parents' health insurance up to age 26! So make sure you check with your state laws before worrying about it!

Are you planning on taking a Disney class that your school has already agreed to give you credit for but aren't sure if there will be any more room in the class available for you?

Don't worry! She also told me that as long as you bring a letter from your college or university stating which class(es) you will take at Disney as well as the fact that you will be receiving credit with you to check-in, you'll be GUARANTEED a spot, no matter how full the class is! Nice, huh?

A few random notes:

1. Don't forget to ask me questions via formspring! I love answering them :)
2. About 3 weeks to go until my character performer audition! I'm starting to get a little anxious now. Time to brush up on my dancing!
3. Roommate Notifications are up and running for people doing Fall Advantage 2010! If you're looking for a roommate or have already found one and want to guarantee them as your roommate, log in to the roommate notification!

The Unnamed Post

Hey everyone! First off, I want to apologize for not doing my blog that often. I try to write a post once a week and even though I meet my goal, it's not as frequent as I'd like. I've been so busy with my school work, as I'm sure many of you have, and I'm only slightly obsessed with the Olympics :). That said, I can't wait for the semester to be over because then that means I'll be only that much closer to leaving for DISNEYWORLD!

I officially accepted my offer for QSFB last Friday and picked June 7th as my arrival date. It was a bittersweet moment however because I was planning on rooming with Abby, Jenn, Sara, Tracie, and Lyanne. Unfortunately this couldn't happen because the June 14th date wasn't available for me or Lyanne and that was the date the other four chose. So Lyanne and I have decided to room together (Yay!), hopefully in a 3-bedroom at Chatham, just like we were supposed to with the other four. Maybe we'll all end up being room neighbors! That would be so much fun!

Also, I got my beautiful purple folder in the mail Tuesday! It seems so much more real now that I have the tangible proof! In the folder was a lot of information about the living, earning, and learning aspects of the program as well as a more in-depth description of my role. I actually still haven't read it all. The reason for that is because I've become a little addicted to the online game I now have access to since I accepted my position in the college program. It's called the Timekeeper and the point is to save "Disney's Heritage" from the Evil Sidheron. Basically, all you do is go from planet to planet reading all these really cool facts about all things Disney and take little quizzes about the information you just uncovered. The faster you get the right answer, the higher your score. Last time I checked, I was rank 5 of all-time but that's probably changed by now. It is really fun though because I'm learning so many interesting facts about the company! So if you haven't tried it yet and you've already accepted, you should!

On another note, I've been trying my hand at making a vlog...and my camera insists on acting up every time. If not my camera then my microphone. Maybe it's better this way as I'm a terrible editor :P I promise I'll do one sometime, but I have NO idea when that will be.

Formspring Question #2 (Keep 'em coming!)

Where in Disney World would you like to work?

I don't have a specific place I want to work yet, more like a general area. I know I want to work in one of the four main parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom. I'm leaning more toward Magic Kingdom though because it is my favorite park and is the most "magical" to me. Also, I think it would be really fun to work my own cart, like the ice-cream cart, though I don't really know why. I know it would be very hot during the summer and since the carts are outside....well you know what it must be like for the people who stand there all day. Still, it seems like a fun job. :)

Also, I'm not really sure what to talk about in my posts. I know you guys don't always want to read about me :P ! If you have any suggestions, please comment!

As always, congratulations to those that have recently been accepted and tons of pixie dust for those still waiting!

Until next time,

Classes, questions, audition, acceptance .....wait....say WHAT?!

YES! After nearly 3 weeks of waiting, I finally received my purple email at 4:09 this morning! I was accepted as a quick service food and beverage cast member and I could not be happier!

I was not expecting to hear today because I thought I finally knew the pattern that Disney had going with its acceptances, but I was wrong! Disney tricked me, but I am so glad to have it now! I got up really early this morning because I was having trouble sleeping so I thought I would go check my email, just for fun. My internet isn't the fastest at college so I saw that I had 3 unread emails before they actually popped up. I just froze in my seat when I saw inbox (3). Surely, one of them had to be for the program, right? I held my breath and my heart started POUNDING in my chest. As soon as the titles of the emails came up, my eyes fell upon "Disney College Program: Your Invitation". I'm not gonna lie, I burst into tears. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. I had never wanted anything as badly as I wanted this. I called my mom as soon as I regained my ability to speak and, after I bawled again, we were both squealing with joy. Also, everyone has been congratulating me all day and I just feel so loved to know all these wonderful people. I appreciate each and every one of you! I'm pretty much now in a state of permanent euphoria. I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I still have my audition to look forward to! I can breathe easier now that I know I've gotten accepted, so I can actually begin to prepare for the audition. I'm not scared about the audition, more like excited! Although, that may be likely to change the closer I get to actually auditioning. I really just plan to have fun with it and put my whole heart into it. Even if I don't get entertainment, I'll still be satisfied knowing I did my best. Plus, I'll still have QSFB, which is awesome!

In others disney college program related news, I met with the education department at my college on Monday to see if they would allow me college credit for some of the classes in Disney. After a bit of reasoning and a dash of pixie dust, they did! I am really excited for these classes because they look like tons of fun, not I will hopefully be taking Creativity and Innovations and Experiential Learning, both of which will be transferred back as credits!

Now onto my first (of hopefully many!) formspring question!

Why do you want to do the CP?

I hoped I’d get this question! Most people, when I’d tell that I might be working for Disney soon, either stare at me blankly, or worse, wear this look on their face that says, “Are you serious? That is so childish.” Those people really don’t know what they’re missing! The Disney company is this grand fortune 100 business and, aside from looking amazing on a resume, it will truly be an honor to work there. I, first and foremost, absolutely love Disney. I love the characters, the concepts, the place, the magical feeling it gives you, and everything it stands for. For everyone who knows me at college, I am “the Disney girl.” My room is decked out in Disney; posters, figures, clothes, you name it, I probably have some form of it. I love it and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Aside from increasing my love for Disney, I believe the program would also help me grow more as a person. I haven’t had much work experience yet and I think this would be the perfect opportunity to gain that experience, while meeting tons of new people, encountering different cultures, improving my people skills and learning so much from such a highly esteemed company! The most important reason to me for doing the cp, however, would be the opportunity to make other people's lives as magical as Disney has already made mine. I've always wanted to be part of that magic!

I'm really sorry my post is all over the place and tons of things were just thrown together so I'll end this quickly. Congratulations to the many college program hopefuls who got in today! To all those others still waiting, please do not give up hope!

Remember: *~If you can dream it, you can do it!~*

And I must say, Walt Disney certainly knew what he was talking about!

The Waiting Game Continues...

It is the end of day 15 for me as I continue to wait for a certain purple email/folder. The third wave of acceptances was sent out this morning. I'm getting a little anxious now. The first week after my interview flew by for me. I foolishly thought the waiting game was a little overexaggerated...was I ever wrong. Once the second wave of acceptances came out, you know the ones that came at 3 am, I knew Disney had no boundaries for when they sent out these coveted emails. I was so sure I'd hear by or on Friday. I became a little more antsy. I even started to....gasp....doubt myself. Yes, I'm a terrible person. Others have probably second-guessed themselves, right? I really have no reason to though. I've barely passed the 2 week mark. I still have plenty of time to hear back.

It's really difficult to not think about the program, however, when you have an entire WEEK off of school because of the snow. I had to do something to keep myself busy. So, here is a small list of the some of the things that I look at to pass the time:

1. PF "Wait" Watchers If you haven't taken a look at this yet, please do! It has a bunch of great videos pertaining to Disney from tv specials about the parks to some of the original cartoons compiled by some of the upcoming fall hopefuls like myself! HOURS of fun to be had here!

2. Disney Pictures I absolutely LOVE looking at this site. These are some incredible pictures taken at different places in Disney World. Trey Ratcliff, the photographer, is brilliant. This is actually where I got my blog picture because I was so impressed by them. Here are a few of my favorites:

Also, be sure to check out his other photographs! He takes them all over the world!

3. 20 Questions: Disney Style! I actually have the handheld version of this. It's in the shape of mickey and so adorable! Seriously considering bringing it down with me to Florida, if I get accepted of course :). Anyway, it is so much fun! This isn't like your regular game of 20 questions, oh no, because it's all about Disney! Think of any disney character, place, or thing and it will ask you questions and do its best to guess what you're thinking! It's guessed Fox and the Hound, Test Track, Taran, and 50's Prime Time Cafe from me already! Just make sure you choose Disney at the top of the web page and then buckle your seat belts for some serious Disney fun!

So there you have it. These are just a few of the things I do to keep myself busy while I wait for a beloved purple email/folder. I'm really hoping I hear soon! Fingers crossed!

Until next time,
